Bravado finds Brannen doing what he does best—channeling a segment of the American psyche. Given the complex nature of 21st century life and the detail and nuance Brannen brings to his work, Bravado is, not surprisingly, a project with real weight and scope.

Enlisting the arranging talents of Don Costa, Rankin created a classic lush, romantic album: "Here's That Rainy Day," "When Sunny Gets Blue," "On and On," "Groovin" and his moody, heartfelt "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."Of all the R&B, rock, and pop artists to work with orchestras interpreting the great American songbook, few have matched the originality and fine results of this release.

Inside

Perhaps his best album, Inside represents the peak of all the different skills Rankin brings to his music. "She's a Lady," "Creepin'," "Up From the Skies," "Lost up in Loving You" and "Sunday Kind of Love" show his ease with rock, pop and R&B sounds. This is a near perfect album and as good as '70s singer/songwriter music gets.

Silver Morning ranks as one of the best and most representative albums of that time. Rankin does a fine job covering Gordon Lightfoot ("Pussywillows, Cat Tails"), but he really shines on his reworkings of the Beatles' songbook. "Blackbird," "Penny Lane," show him to be one of the best interpreters of the Beatles' music. Moreover, in lending the songs his distinctive sound, they transcend being mere cover versions. This is easily one of his best albums.

His reworking of "Peaceful" brought the song, and ultimately Rankin, a wider audience. The album eschews some of the preciousness of previous efforts and has a more universal appeal. Songs like the title cut and "Stringman" spotlight Rankin's continued growth as a songwriter.

Rankin's second release follows in the same musical direction as his debut. Again, there are fine covers of singer/songwriters of the late '60s, including reworkings of music from Gordon Lightfoot, Steve Stills, and Donovan. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," gives birth to Rankin's ability to make Beatles songs all his own.

The highlight of the album is Rankin's own composition, the inviting "Peaceful," which foreshadows his later work. While the long-out-of-print album only shows glimpses of his full abilities, it has a quaint, antiquated '60s charm and even includes liner notes from none other than Johnny Carson
