Terry Gibbs
In 1947 the center of the jazz universe was the two blocks on 52nd Street between 5th and 7th Avenues. (This was a year before the trend toward larger jazz clubs began when the fried chicken restaurant, the Royal Roost, on Broadway near Duffy Square, changed its music policy and two years before Birdland opened on Broadway between 52nd and 53rd.)
Terry, like many of the musicians of his generation, grew up in the Swing Era but was just graduating from his teens when the music of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie captured the hearts and souls of so many aspiring jazz players. This new musical language, dubbed bebop, engendered a great passion for playing. It didn’t matter whether these young cats were being paid for a gig or just jamming, and Terry came to this enthusiasm with his own, already built-in energy.
