NEW ALBUM "REACH" COMING 2017
From a very early age, Christian Sands possessed an insatiable appetite for music. He was enrolled in music classes at age four and wrote his first composition at age five. He started playing professionally at ten-years-old, and studied at the Neighborhood Music School and the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, CT. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. His involvement in the school’s Kenya Revisited album earned the pianist his first Grammy® Award-nomination for Best Latin Piano Solo.
A deeply rich and soulful feeling can be heard in Sands’ music, characterized by his infectious energy and spirit. It was that same spirit that caught the attention of Grammy® Award winning bassist Christian McBride, inviting Sands to become a permanent fixture of McBride’s Trio, ultimately recording and touring the world with the critically acclaimed bassist.
Since arriving on the scene, Sands has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Diane Reeves, Shelia E, Jason Moran, Geri Allen, Ben Williams, Warren Wolf, Tia Fuller, Gary Burton, Stefan Harris, Teri Lynne Carrington, Randy Brecker, Steve Johns, Avery Sharpe, James Moody, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans (sax), Russell Malone, Terrance Blanchard, Louis Hayes, Patti Austin, Marcus Baylor, Craig Handy, Carl Allen, Kirk Whalum, and Wycliffe Gordon, among others.
In 2016, Sands was signed to the prestigious Mack Avenue Records and is set to release his U.S. album debut as a leader, taking his well-earned place as a leader, with Reach—set to be released in early 2017. The album will feature saxophonist Marcus Strickland, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, drummer Marcus Baylor, guitarist Gilad Hekselman and even a special appearance from Christian McBride.
Pianist Christian Sands invents and re-invents himself with sonorities that define each moment, rhythms which impel his music forward, structures which are surprising and fascinating — and never for a moment un-musical. He personifies the rising musicality and spiritual aspirations of a singularly gifted musical soul.
“To whom much is given, much is expected.” — Christian Sands
